Elisabeth Kumm

Elisabeth is a founding member of the Victoria Theatres Trust. Her series Pets of the Public was a regular feature of On Stage from 1999 to 2005, looking at “forgotten” nineteenth century performers. She continues to contribute articles for the THA website, and from 2018 has been editor of the THA Newsletter. As a theatrical historian and biographer she assisted Viola Tait with her book on pantomime – Dames, Principal Boys…and All That (published by Macmillan in 2001) and also worked with her on her memoirs I Have a Song to Sing (published by THA in 2018). Elisabeth has also undertaken research for the Riley/Hailes Scrapbook and JCW Scene Books projects. Most recently she has been working on the Falk Studios album project including acting as editor of The Falk Studios book (published by THA in 2021).

Married JC Williamson (actor & manager), 2 February 1873, San Francisco, California, USA (div. 1899), (2) HR Roberts (actor), 12 April 1902, New York City, New York, USA. Died 15 March 1926, San Francisco, California, USA.

On stage in Australia from 1874, performing in G&S, comedy, drama, pantomime. One of her early successes was in Struck Oil alongside JC Williamson.

English actress & vocalist. Née Lillian Decima Moore. Born 11 December 1871, Brighton, Sussex, England. Daughter of Edward Henry Moore (chemist) and Emily Strachan. Sister of Bertha Moore (actress), Jessie Moore (actress), Eva Moore (actress). Married (1) Cecil Ainslie Walker-Leigh (actor), 1896 (div. 1902), (2) Frederick Gordon Guggisberg (Later Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Gold Coast), 1905. Died 2 February 1964, Kensington, London, England. aged 93.

On stage in England from 1889, having studied singing under Rose Hersee. Awarded CBE, 1918.

Australian actress & vocalist. Born 20 July 1882, Geelong, VIC, Australia. Daughter of Robert William Moore and Mary Wyatt. Sister of Ivy Moore (actress). Married (1) Percy Plantagenet Bigwood, (2) John Wyatt. Died 5 September 1956, Sydney, NSW, Australia.

On stage from the age of thirteen; enjoyed success in Australia and England performing in musical comedy, pantomime and vaudeville.

American-English actor. Né Richard Tomlinson. Born 25 August 1827, Gawennis, Long Island, USA. Married Laleah Burpee Bigelow, 30 August 1871. Died 1 September 1871, London, England, aged 44 (committed suicide).

On stage in England and Australia from 1863. Toured Australia 1867-1868, performing Shakespeare and melodrama.

Irish actress & dancer. Née Marie Dolores Eliza Rosanna Gilbert. Born 17 February 1821, Grange, County Sligo, Ireland. Died 17 January 1861, New York, USA.

Toured Australia 1855-1856, performing her notorious Spider Dance and other entertainments in Sydney and Melbourne and on the Victorian goldfields.

Scottish actress. Née Winifred Linck Moffat. Born 2 May 1899, Scotland. Daughter of Graham Moffat (actor) and Mrs Graham Moffat (actress). Died 22 April 1969, Cape Town, South Africa.

Visited Australia 1914-1915 for JC Williamson Ltd, appearing in the Scottish comedy Bunty Pulls the Strings and other plays.

Australian operatic vocalist (soprano). Née Helen Porter Mitchell. Born 19 May 1861, Melbourne, VIC, Australia. Daughter of David Mitchell (builder) and Isabella Ann Dow. Married Charles Nesbitt Frederick Armstrong, 22 December 1882, Brisbane, QLD, Australia (div.). Died 23 February 1931, Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Australia's most famous opera singer, studied under Pietro Cecchi and Mathilde Marchesi. Created a DBE in 1918 for 'services in organising patriotic work'.
