The Sunbury Story

The Sunbury Story, part 3 (of 3)

Graeme Rees-Jones concludes his behind-the-scenes story of Australia’s greatest rock festival.

Sunbury certainly seemed to attract some wonderful ‘characters’. In addition to Paul Hogan and Molly Meldrum who acted as comperes, one of the most interesting was ‘the Wizard’. He really was an ‘act’ as he amused the patrons as he walked around the site, but I thought his best performance was to conduct an auction of supposed turds in an empty thunderbox which had been left in one of the walkways. I think that the bidding stopped at $6.25! We talked and I ascertained that he was an Oxford graduate on holidays, a Flight Lieutenant in the RAF and an amateur actor. A very interesting chap.
