John Beckett, set designer, carpenter and property maker, puppet designer and maker, lighting designer, was born on 21 February 1949.

Responsible for the design conversion of the old Malthouse in Melbourne, which was originally built as a brewery and malt-house in 1892, into two theatres in 1990, his work continued with the groundbreaking theatre company in a vast number of creative areas. The Beckett Theatre at the Malthouse was named after him.

John died peacefully at his home in France on 9 May 2025.
