Noted American leading comic actor. On stage in USA and Australia. In Australia in 1862 performing in Sydney and at Princess’s and Haymarket Theatres in Melbourne, playing Rip Van Winkle, Dr Pangloss and Salem Scudder. Wrote autobiography, The Autobiography of Joseph Jefferson, The Century Co., 1890; republished as Rip Van Winkle: The autobiography of Joseph Jefferson, Reinhardt & Evans, Ltd., 1949.
