The Third Kiss – c.1960 New York demo recording

Selections from Fred G. Moritt’s score for his unproduced musical version of The Barretts of Wimpole Street were recorded at the Bell Sound Studios at 237 West 54th Street in New York City around 1960 with musical accompaniment arranged by Ray Ellis and featuring mezzo-soprano Kay Armen (who performed the songs allotted to Elizabeth Barrett), and vocalists Rosemarie Jun and Bernard Knee (who chiefly sang the lighter numbers in Moritt’s score). The resulting non-commercial Demonstration Record was issued on a 12” 33-1/3 rpm Long Playing record with the assigned inventory number of FM 10764-B. (After auditioning Moritt’s libretto and score for The Third Kiss, Martin Landau considered it unsuitable for production and contracted Ron Grainer and Ronald Millar to write a new musical version of the Besier play with the additional credit “from an original idea by Fred G. Moritt.”)

Audio from the demo recording of The Third Kiss made available to THA by permission of Kurt Gänzl for Talent Artists.
