Celebrating 150 years of Gilbert and Sullivan in Victoria

When, in 1875, Richard D'Oyly Carte engaged WS Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan to create Trial by Jury, a one-act piece to fill out the bill, no one thought that this would be the start of the most successful collaboration the theatrical world has known. Australia was quick to jump on the bandwagon when JC Williamson bought the rights for Australasia and it began his company's dominance in antipodean theatre.

Ninety years ago The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Victoria was formed, one of the three oldest continuously performing companies in Australia. Now performing as Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Victoria, it continues to present the work of these masters.

To celebrate the sesquicentenary of G&S and the birthday of the society, Diana Burleigh will trace the history of the Savoy Operas in Victoria. This will be followed by a concert performance of Trial by Jury by Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Victoria.

Diana has a long association with Gilbert and Sullivan and is internationally recognised as an authority on the works. She has has directed everyone of the operas here and at the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in the UK, winning both best director and best production. As Vice-President of Theatre Heritage Australia, Diana has shown a devotion to the study of history of the performing arts.

All are welcome, however bookings are required.
